“Paul et Virginie” is one of the oldest and most popular folklore tales of Mauritius and is somewhat of a Mauritian version of Romeo and Juliet.
Following the unfortunate shipwreck of the ship St Geran, stories arose about the son of a slave, Paul, who earnestly waited for his lover, Virginie, a daughter of bourgeois origin. When Paul witnessed the ship meet its end, he jumped in the water to the rescue of his beloved. However, she refused to strip off her clothes in order to swim back to shore and hence drowned to her death. Heartbroken from the loss of his loved one, Paul soon died of a broken heart.
A monument has been erected on the beach of Poudre d’Or to commemorate the location of the shipwreck and this famous local folklore.
