Nestled in the north the Island, ‘Chateau de Labourdonais’ welcomes its visitors in a peaceful and quiet backdrop. This beautifully looked after home was built in 1856 and has hosted over three generations until 2006 when the agricultural company of Domaine de Labourdonais restored the property to make it an official estate and attraction.
The property is a unique souvenir for the island and a visit to the area is an immersion into the art of living in Mauritius of the 19th century . From the moment you turn into the majestic Intendance tree-lined (Ficus Retusa) avenue leading to the Château, visitors will discover a magical place that shines a spotlight on Mauritian history, nature, cuisine and savoir-faire. It is a complete pleasure to visit the interior of the mansion and discover the selection of antiques and furniture dated back in the 18th century.
An inspiring garden awaits you with lush vegetation and a mesmerizing collection orchards with over fifty varieties of fruits which includes the hundred-year-old mango trees, spice trees such as nutmeg and clove, as well as several exotic fruit trees such as the mimusops coriacea, white sapote, syzygium samarangense and the Kythira plum.
At the end of the visit, clients are invited to take a seat at the estate’s tasting bar and to sample the products of the Domaine’s distillery and orchards. These include a range of delicious rums, jams, fruit jellies and fruit juices made on the estate.
You can also experience the Estate on board of the train Labourdonnais Express and discover the estate, its history and its production orchards.
